SIDLIT Newsletter 10

SIDLIT 2006 News, Issue Ten
Registration is now closed with over 275 registrants for the 7th Annual Summer Institute on Distance Learning and Instructional Technology (SIDLIT, pronounced "sidelight"). That's the largest enrollment ever for the two day institute (Thursday & Friday, August 3-4, 2006) which will be held in Regnier Hall on the KU-Edwards Campus in Overland Park, Kansas.

Are You Still Planning to Attend?
If you have registered for SIDLIT (check out the Current Roster of Attendees) and need to cancel, please email Beth Ramirez ASAP. For planning purposes we need accurate numbers. If you indicated that you would attend both days and now only plan to attend one, please notify Beth at bramirez@jccc.edu.

Invitation to WebCeTera: Learning & Teaching Online
WebCeTera: Learning and Teaching Online has been offered for JCCC faculty as well as members of the Colleague to Colleague organization since the summer of 2004. The training covers both WebCT tools and the pedagogy of online instruction. One of the concurrent sessions on Thursday, August 3, 2006 at 1 p.m. will be a reunion for all past WebCeTera graduates and a Graduation for the summer 2006 graduates. Additionally, the session is open to all SIDLIT attendees. It'll provide an opportunity to hear about the course (to be offered again online starting September 10, 2006), and discuss issues regarding WebCT, online training, faculty training and to ask questions of the panelists as well as past graduates..

College Credit or CEUs Available for SIDLIT Participation
Again this year, Emporia State University (ESU) will be offering either graduate or undergraduate credit for participation at SIDLIT. For more information visit http://idt.emporia.edu/aseguin/sidlit/ or the table near Registration in the RH Main Lobby.

Johnson County Community College will provide CEU certificates for SIDLIT participants. Based on participation in each full day of SIDLIT (approximately 7 hours per day) you can earn .7 CEUs per day (1.4 CEUs for participating both days). If interested, stop at the registration desk in the RH Main Lobby and signup. There will be a daily sign-in sheet. JCCC charges $15 per CEU certificate.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City will also be offering credit for SIDLIT participation. Just visit their table near the SIDLIT Registration desk in the RH Main Lobby when you arrive August 3. Enrollment forms, guidelines for accessing grades and transcripts plus copies of the syllabus will be available. Participants who sign up for credit will be billed by UMKC.

Featured Sessions
In preparation for SIDLIT here are the details on several key Institute sessions. This week's featured sessions are:

Supplementing Online Courses with Camtasia Video Tutorials
This presentation will discuss the process and techniques used to create high quality video tutorials that can assist in either replacing face-to-face courses or supplementing them. Camtasia is a great tool and can be used in a variety of ways including distance learning courses, helpdesk support, library assistance, usability studies, training, supplementing documentation and much, much more.

Technology: Leveling the Playing Field in Education
Engaging students in a “face-to-face” situation can have its challenges, but it can be a monumental task in an online environment. This presentation will suggest different technologies that will allow students to be socially and creatively involved in their learning. One example which will be discussed is using Blogs to get students, who are normally too reserved to speak-up in class, another way to contribute their ideas. Another example would be using a collaboration tool like Wikis for group and class projects. It will also explain how these same technologies can minimize the learning gap for those students who might otherwise be "disadvantaged" in the traditional classroom (e.g. students with: language barriers, attention problems, physical handicaps).

The Web Conferencing Value Proposition: Engaging Learners in Real Time
This session will focus on the value provided to distance learning initiatives by web conferencing and real time interaction. Session participants will hear two case studies, one presented on-site and the other presented remotely, and online. Dr. Eugene Kowch of the University of Calgary will join the session remotely to talk about the University's use of web conferencing to drive their Blended Learning initiative. As well, Dr. Darrin Cheney from the University of Kansas Medical Center will attend on-site to discuss the role that web conferencing plays with that institution. Both will explain how their institutions have deployed the virtual classroom and the value they have experienced.

What Is an Institutional Repository and Why Do We Need One?
Institutions of higher education have long been the centers of research and scholarship in our society, but how does an institution preserve and enable access to the wide range of scholarly and professional works created by faculty? The University of Kansas' Digital Initiatives program first offered an institutional repository called KU ScholarWorks in early 2005. This institutional repository makes important research available to a wider audience and helps assure its long-term preservation. This program will talk about the institutionally repository movement in higher education and KU's decision to provide KU Scholarworks. Topics will touch on technology issues (the decision to support open source versus a commercial product, OAI Harvesting, persistent URL's, preservation issues), factors that contribute to a successful repository service (working with faculty to promote use of the repository, creator responsibilities, faculty involvement), and potential differences in the scope and scale of repositories for Universities, colleges, and 2-year schools.
