Five Step Plan for Getting an Internship
Step 3: Begin Searching
This can be an intimidating process, although it doesn't have to be.
Networking
- If you are not already, become active in the IDSA including ASID,
IIDA, and NKBA student chapters.
- When attending functions and lectures, speak with the designers
and hand out your business cards.
- Call a designer or business and set up a day of shadowing. This is
a great opportunity because it gets you in the door without the business
feeling pressured. Students shadow a designer as a part of Interior Design
II.
- Talk with fellow students and find out where they are
interning/working and ask about their experiences.
Applying
- Apply for more than one position. Contact as many prospects and
set up as many interviews as possible.
- Monster.com is a good place to post your resume for internships.
- Never try to interview or find an internship over the phone,
- Utilize the local phone book and local design
magazines/publications for listings of local prospects and visit the
location to set up an interview.
