Minutes for Fall 2008 Meeting

October 17, 2008

 

The meeting began with a welcome and introductions.

Present at the meeting:  Jeff Bailey, Jan Cummings, Donna Duffy, Darla Green, Jack Harris, Sharon Hilt, Diana Ingham, Bobanne Kalkofen, Meghan Lynch, Carol Mundy, Beverly Odom, Suzanne Provines, Lindy Robinson, Susan Sage, Ronda Staton, Nancy Sylvester, Carrie Thompson, Caroline Wake, Lauren Wilkinson.

Minutes of the Spring 2008 advisory board meeting were presented approved as read. 

Program Activities:

Completing GEB 356-358:  T-5 Lighting is now in place.  The dimmable fluorescent lighting provides lighting without shadows and eye strain, along with color correction. There is also capital funding that will allow the interior design department to finish the room with a presentation board system and fans for ventilation.

Adjunct Space Remodel OCB 272: The project was undertaken in Summer 2008. Dirtt system components, new lighting and carpet were installed- this is a floor to ceiling system. 

Learning Communities:  Donna Duffy spoke about the Materials and Resources Learning Community.  She stated that over the last 7-8 semesters there is significant evidence that the learning level is advantageous in the learning community and this is a positive advantage. 

The Art History/History of Furniture and Ornamentation Learning Community will be taught again next semester.  The Tuesday/Thursday class will be held on Tuesdays in a Nerman museum education classroom and then Thursdays at the Nelson Atkins Museum as well as the Spencer in Lawrence.

20/20 classes:  Currently 20/20 is being taught in a workshop on the Saturday prior to the semester starting.  We are developing a new course outline for a one credit class.  Diana Ingham and Darla Green spoke on how 20/20 is being utilized in Kitchen and Bath, Residential and Commercial Design classes.  It is a good application to do perspectives and then you can do hand drawings.  Several advisory board members spoke saying that it would be beneficial for students to have a more in depth knowledge of 20/20. A one credit class is 15 classroom hours and can be a 4- 5 week course. It was suggested that this course be on a Saturday or evening so that industry people would also be able to benefit from it.

Sustainability: Sustainability and Green Design are major discussions on campus. A college task force has been formed.  We currently are looking into ways to be better stewards within the college, partnering with the community and looking at new curriculum and degree options.  We also have a grant for a sustainable center.  Jan and Jo Randolph are going to the AASHE Conference in North Carolina with 4 others from JCCC.  Lindy spoke on how the purchasing department is going to be utilizing the green statements.  JCCC will use vendors that have green products for us to purchase.

Interior design currently has a one credit hour course, Sustainable Design.   We would like to consider a possible sustainable design certificate.  Diana and Jan discussed what else can be taught, such as classes on “Economics of Sustainability and Environmental Science.  Our Materials and Resources class is also teaching about “green”, sustainable and eco friendly materials.  Jan asked for input from the board to make the curriculum stronger.

Student “Show and Tell”

  1.  KC Star article on armoires.  Bobanne spoke about the Casegoods class armoire repurpose project that was written up in the KC Star. Other newspapers owned by the parent company of the Star across the United States have picked it up for publication. 

B.      Events with Kansas City Homes and Gardens Magazine.

·         Remodel of the year judging in spring the gala was this fall. Students juried the event.

·         April ’08 Kristine Armstrong Scott was the Silver winner of the Home of the Year.

C.      JWSA - student room is shown on the interior design web site. Jack Harris stated that it was amazing to him that the number of graduates that participate in the Showhouse every year.

 

Harald Boehmer JCCC Scholar in Residence:  Carol Mundy spoke saying that he was a charming guest and he fit right in.  She hosted him while he was in town.  He is a German bio-chemist who established the DOBAG project in Turkey. Dr. Boehmer was a JCCC Scholar in Residence in September and presented two programs one on the Nomads of Anatolia and one on the DOBAG project.

 

Interior Design Website: Diana has been working very hard getting the “new and improved” website up and running.  Advisory Board members were asked to take time to visit the site.

Jan spoke about posting the advisory board minutes on the website and asked for board approval.  She will send the minutes via email for board approval and then post to the website.  There was a positive acceptance to this request.  Jeff Bailey stated that it was a good idea and he feels honored and privileged to be part of this board.  Jack Harris said that on the 15 years that he has been on the board, he didn’t think that there was anything that was “confidential” and couldn’t be posted.

Jan asked if there are concerns to please let her be aware of it.

Career and Tech Ed Advisory Board:  Jeff Bailey is a member of this college wide committee and currently the elected Chairman of this committee.  Discussion about the Technical Education Authority and how programs across the state will be affected ensued. Dr. Bill Osborn, Bill Brown and Dr. Joe Sopcich are the campus leaders of this group.

JCCC Advisory Board Task Force: Jan is a member of this campus task force to implement guidelines for all JCCC advisory boards. By spring 2009 the task force will present a guideline handbook for advisory boards and members.

Other Departmental Activities: Please go to our website for information on ASID – Real World Design Week, NKBA event in November, IIDA career day in February and the Don Gerds workshop in March. The workshop is a fundraiser for the HPC Scholarship.

Scholarship Updates:

Jack Harris Roast.  Board members received an invitation and were asked to pass it along to another person.  There will be three scholarship recipients during this event.

 

Design Merit Awards were presented May 2nd 2008 at Armstrong Kitchens four (4) $300.00 awards were given.

It was also announced that Kelly Specht received a MoWest/Kansas ASID scholarship at the annual meeting in September.

Other Business:

The program is looking into a potential design opportunity at the New Horizon Ranch.

Diana Ingham and Sharon Hilt are going to be walking for Autism Speaks.  Please go to her website for donation forms.

Lori McCann and Teri Bengston are students that were recently featured in the KC Star. They are employed at Straw/Sticks and Bricks.

39 classes are being offered for spring 2009.

The balance of the meeting was spent discussing re-writing the department mission statement.
